Safety Certification Requirements

Every MUTAmarq Contractor undertakes:

  1. To use only fabric suppliers of whom details have been provided under the MUTAmarq Scheme and whose quality systems have been approved.
  2. To maintain sufficient documentation of their internal systems which shall include the means of identifying the age and type of fabrics held. Note that it is not necessary to identify the specific manufacturer of an individual item provided that the item can be shown to have been manufactured to an approved standard by one of the suppliers as above.
  3. To afford every facility to the inspector to carry out his duties.
  4. To pay the Marquee Section Subscription in addition to the general membership subscription


  5. TENT PANELS
  6. To use only durably fire retardant fabric in tents for public assembly and like purposes; such fabrics shall comply with the standards listed in the Home Office Recommendations.
  7. To maintain a system which ensures that no tent fabric more than 5 years old may be used for public assembly unless:
      EITHER
    • It has been retested for flame retardancy, the test either being commissioned as part of the MUTA re-test scheme or by the contractor and carried out by a NAMAS accredited test house

    • OR
    • It is covered by the Home Office exemption for infrequently used tents which have a log book.
  8. To ensure that tent panels taken into stock from 1 January 1996 are labelled giving the following information
    • Name, address and telephone number of contractor and either date first taken into hire stock or date of manufacture if there is a period of more than eight months between the two dates.
    • Name, address and telephone number of panel manufacturer if not the contractor
    • Name, address and telephone number of proofer or coater
    • Country of test, standard used and performance level achieved

  9. LININGS
  10. To use only flame retardant linings which are:
      EITHER
    • Made from inherently flame retardant yarn such as Fidion or Trevira CS
    • OR
    • Non-inherently fire retardant fabric, in which case a written record shall be kept of usage, washing and re-treatment in accordance with manufacturers instructions
    • In either case linings shall comply with BS 5867

  11. FLOOR COVERINGS
  12. To use only floor coverings which are:
      EITHER
    • Fire retardant in accordance with BS 4790 (low radius of effect); such floor coverings shall be carved for in accordance with the manufacturers instructions to ensure that flame retardancy performance is maintained throughout the life of the product
    • OR
    • Lightweight polypropylene carpet which when tested using BS 4790 has a flame spread not exceeding 52 mm per minute. Such floor coverings shall be discarded after one use.
